GDS Volunteers at Feed My Starving Children

On Friday, March 1, several employees from our Marietta office participated in a volunteering opportunity at Feed My Starving Children (FMSC), which is a non-profit organization committed to feeding starving children by providing nutritionally complete meals specifically formulated for malnourished children around the world. The process at FMSC is simple. Donations are given by people to fund the meal ingredients. Then, volunteers hand-pack the meals, which are later sent to FMSC’s food partners to donate the meals around the world. The organization makes sure the meals get to those who need them the most through their exceptional network of mission and humanitarian organizations.

Feed My Starving Children provided our employees with a powerful volunteer experience. Machines were not used to package the meals, which made the experience more personal and impactful because our employees packed the meals by hand. Since meals were hand-packed, assembly lines were made to help make the process more efficient. Along with having a great experience volunteering and helping those in need, our employees saw this chance as a great team building opportunity.

GDS had several employees working in the assembly line helping to fill meal packs by filling the packets with vitamins, vegetables, soy, and rice. Then, the packets are given to the weight team to make sure the right amount of food had been placed into each pack. It was then handed off to the seal team, who sealed the packets, which were then placed in a box ready to be shipped. We also had several GDS volunteers as “floor runners” who provided each assembly line with ingredients and materials once they ran out. At the end of the day, 242 boxes were filled with a total of 52,272 meal packs. This was enough to feed 142 children for a whole year. GDS volunteers really enjoyed this opportunity and helping children in need around the world.
